move, copy, rotate using dynamic handle on NX 6 above

Starting from NX 6, new features that simplify the design is the process transform, move and copy, it can be done dynamically and previews directly, for those not familiar, of course it would be difficult, but the actual steps that need to be done very easily.

The principle works as follows
1. click the icon
2. select objects
3. move the handle
4. click OK

information in detail,
The first: select the icon move objects, or Click edit -> move object / click CTRL + SHIFT + M (first image above shows the steps to choosing the icon move objects)
The second: After Appear dialog box, on the move drop-down menu, select Dynamic (as shown on below picture)

Third: Click the object That you want to move or copy, UCS handles will appear, we can move the object by moving the handle, if you want to copy a copy please click the radio button on the options available

fourth : By default handle UCS on dynamic move will located on center of part, we can move it by select move handle only. Then click OK

(sample result after clicking OK Button)

We also can rotate by rotating handle

Change folder first time load for save or open file

To define how and where NX load part file, we need to configure some basic function like, save, open and assembly.
Dialog box will appear, like the below picture, from the dialog box here we can set up load the file first time as may be required, it is easier for us in working with Unigraphic later.

1. Part version
You can set whether each time to load a new file or open a file starting from the folder, or history. UGS default is the folder
.

2. scope
You can choose all the components directly on the load time, or just based on the stored data, or other options, are generally used are all components (including part assembly).

3. Save Load option
Save to file, serve to redirect the folder to load the first time, after the set, every time you open a new file, the folder will be automatically redirected to it.
So is the open from the file, after we set the folder, each time it opens the file it will automatically be redirected to a folder that was set.

use asymmetric chamfer

asymmetric chamfer use when we want chamfer and edge in solid model, it's very simple to begin the chamfer process,
1. make some solid model, it can be solid cubic, prism, and other solid shape. i make cubic for example here, like picture below

2. click chamfer icon, like picture below

3. when chamfer dialog box appear, choose asymmetric at cross section option, then fill with number at distance text box.

4. click the edge and fill the box with number that you want, or click and drag the arrow at the model.

5. then you will get chamfer like this

Starting Drafting a model in Unigraphics

after we make some model, or part, we need draft the model, drafting is not just give the measure of size of model, but we can put tolerance, setting width of line in drafting and plot it.
oke, let's start drafting in unigraphics NX
to start drafting, from start klik drafting, like picture below

after click drafting, the window will change to drafting window, like picture below

(please click it to enlarge, the fact in picture above have grid view and clear toolbar icon)

first time the drafting environment start, it always have grid in the screen, we can remove it by clicking
1. preferences
2. Work Plane
3. after Work Plane window appear, uncheck grid check box, like picture below

when starting drafting, we always get some question about new sheet parameter in sheet window like picture below

set standard size, then select paper size that you want use in drafting, it's from A0 until A4, after select paper size, select scale of part 1:1 it mean drafting and real model will same. then click OK.

video below will explain more clear step by step to begin drafting

Watch start drafting in How to Videos  |  View More Free Videos Online at Veoh.com

Base View
Base view is first view that will become base, from this view we will make other projected view, we can select various kind of base view, not always from top, for example right view, left view or bottom view can also become base view. at the base view window we can also select scale, and part or model if we have more than one model or part in modeling worksplane. picture below is little explanation of base view

setting environment of Unigraphics NX 5, background and line width

default setting in UGS NX 5 and previous UGS the line thickness of part is always width, this view is doesn't good when we design a lot of part, because it'll difficult to find touching line between face and face.
so some designer product that using UGS always like the thickness or line part is thin, because it more comfortable in our eyes.
to change the width of line product step are
1. goto preferences
2. visualization
3. go to tab line
4. remove check on the width check box
5. click apply
6. click cancel

video below is step by step tutorial to change the thickness line of part.

beside change the the thickness line of part, at video above we can also learn how to setting your background, setting the NX5 Environment. it same with setting the thickness, but click color tab to edit the background color.

set the background with your favorite color

making cone with cylinder base

Now let's turn with beginner level again, simple way to make cone with subtract at the end with cylinder, now to make easier learning from this blog, i post include the dimension of the part that we'll make it.

the dimension is very simple, cylinder with cone, to drawing it in Unigraphics actually is divide in 2 part, cylinder and cone, you can make cone first then cylinder or cylinder first than cone, because the datum of X,Y,Z is located in cylinder, i prefer begin it from cylinder, because it more easy.

Ok, see the the dimension below

first time make the cylinder with height 30 and diameter 10
than make cone with base cylinder, height 15, base diameter 10 and half angle 10

layer setting operation, statics wire frame view mode

tutorial below is simple way to view your object in wire frame, so we can choose some view mode in unigraphics like solid body, sheet body, statics wire frame, shaded view and others

Online Videos by Veoh.com

then after learning view mode, we can learn how to manage object using layer setting. at the sample video above is mold construction 3D model plate with basic bolts, then i want to hidden the bolts in other layer, so we need to manage an object in different layer. basically default setting working layer is always layer 1.

step to move object in different layer are
1. click the move to layer setting icon.
2. click the object that want to move to others layer
3. layer dialog window will appear select the layer number or just type the number that you want.
4. select OK

maximum layer number in unigraphics is 256
look at video above to learn more

With NX5, you can control whether objects are visible or selectable by using layers. A layer is a system-defined attribute that all objects in NX5 must have, such as color, font, and width. by organizing object in layer it will make rendering object more faster, and easy to manage for example when work with large and huge model, all bolts is in one layer, pipe in other layer and so on. There are 256 usable layers in NX5, one of which is always the Work Layer. Any of the 256 layers can be assigned to one of four classifications of status:
• Work
• Selectable
• Visible Only
• Invisible
The Work Layer is the layer that objects are created ON, as i told before when we not set the working layer, we always work in default layer number 1.and is always visible and selectable while it remains the Work Layer. When the Work Layer is changed to another layer, the previous Work Layer automatically becomes Selectable and can then be assigned a status of Visible Only or Invisible.
The number of objects that can be on one layer is not limited but more object in one layer it's make loading and rendering object more slow, so manage using layer is important when we working with large, detail and a lot of object. You have the freedom to choose whichever layer you want to create the object on and the status of that layer.

making Block from Block, offset ediitng , Replace face

video tutorial below i make special for beginner, make block from block before or the datum reference is previous block, it's will help to design some part that use block or plate often, like mold / mould base, casting mold, injection mold and other's.

the basic step is like tutorial before, see at http://ugs-tutor.blogspot.com/2008/06/basic-block-using-two-point-and-height.html
yes.. it's basically same, the different is point that we must selected, then the editing after we make the block.

see the video below

Editing Process
below some editing that i use in those video

Replace Face
use this icon to activated replace face.

after you click those icon, the dialog box will appear, first selection, select the face that you want edit, second button selection is for reference face that you wanted. first face will same with the second face position.
it's fast way to edit face than we fill some value.

Offset Editing

Transparent the object, offset same region, move together in Unigraphics (UGS NX)

at this post below we can learn how to make objects become transparent so we can look the inside of those object, than how to move together a face using offset region.

Transparent an Object
it's cool and sometimes important to make an object become transparent, becouse sometimes we need to look the object in inside the other object more detail.
picture below shown an object with transparent view.

at those sample picture we can see the inside of same object using transparent.
tho make object transparent, you can click object display icon, or by short cut CTLR+J, after that the class selection window will appear

click the object or part, then click OK, or press center button of your mouse. then change the translucency value more than 0,

then click APPLY or OK
or see the complete video tutorial below

Online Videos by Veoh.com

at those video you can also learn how to move face together more than one object or parts. it's simple, just use offset icon then select together the face that want to move, enter the value then click OK.

UNDERSTANDING THE FUNCTIONS OF THE MOUSE BUTTONS

when we design in UGS, 80 % work using mouse, so learning the function of mouse button is basic to work more faster in Unigraphic environments, basically mouse button in UGS divide in three button :
1. MB1 is left button
2. MB2 is scroll button or center button of mouse.
3. MB3 is right button.

The efficient use of these three buttons, along with the CTRL key, can reduce
the time required to complete the design task. The different combinations of the CTRL key and the mouse buttons are listed below:

1. The left mouse button is used to make a selection by simply selecting a face, surface, sketch, solid object or an object from the geometry area or from the Part Navigator. and we can select multiple entities with the this left button (MB1)
2. The right mouse button is used to invoke the shortcut menu, which has different options such as Zoom, Fit, Rotate, Pan, Delete abject,Hide parent, edit parameters, surpress and so on.
3. MB1 + MB2 + Drag, with this key, we can zoom the object.
4. MB2 + Drag, this key is to rotate function, Press and hold the middle mouse
button to invoke the Rotate tool
5. MB2 wheel scroll, is to zoom in and zoom out the object.Press and hold the CTRL key and then the middle mouse button to invoke the Zoom tool.
6. MB2 + MB3 + Drag, Press and hold the middle and the right mouse buttons to invoke the Pan tool, the Pan tool by first pressing
and holding the SHIFT key and then the middle mouse button

Coordinate Systems in UGS NX5

Coordinate system is basic and important to understanding before learn more about using Unigraphics, basically there are two type coordinate system in UGS NX5 :
1.Absolute Coordinate System (ABS) The inertial coordinate system which has its origin on the axis of the Unigraphics and is fixed with respect to the other object.
2. The Work Coordinate System (WCS)is what you will use for construction
when you want to determine orientations and angles of features, the Work Coordinate System (WCS) is used to facilitate geometry construction in different orientations. The WCS can be located and oriented manually anywhere in model space.

Note
All NX coordinate systems are right-hand, Cartesian coordinate systems,
made up of a set of X, Y, and Z axes, 90° apart from each other.

The location and/or orientation of the WCS will need to be considered when
using the following functions:
• Creatinga Primitive Feature (specifically a Block)
• Defining a plane when creating a Sketch
• Creating a Fixed Datum Plane or Fixed Datum Axis
• CreatingaRectangular Instance Array

Existing Coordinate Systems (CSIS)

To return to a specific location and orientation in modeling space, we can use this coordinate system.

Coordinate system Utility ICON

below is list of coordinate system command icon, we will explain in other post

Make block solid body, using icon form feature

Actually we can make a block in various way using Unigraphic by using sketch, icon, and extrude, at this tutorial we make using icon from feature. follow step by step tutorial below
1. first choose block icon from feature.

2. dialog box will appear, there are three type method that we can chose , from left: one point, two point and diagonal point. chose one point

when you choose one point, enter the value of X,Y,Z, fill those text box with , X=80,Y=80 and Z=100.

3. click oke or click MB2 in your mouse (MB2 is scroll button) or click OK button. a block will appear in your screen, (click Ctrl+F2) to fit with screen.

Congratulation you have block like picture above.
What we do when we need to change the dimension ?
just click twice on the block, edit parameter dialog box will appear, we can edit the dimension by clicking feature dialog or by clicking the dimension that appear in the block. now let's change the z dimension from 100 to 20, click the Z dimension that appear, then change the value with 20 in dialog box, click OK, then OK again.
Step1

step2

your block dimension will change

Modeling Environment Window

Picture below shown modeling window after we make new file for modeling,

Tab menu

same with first time environment after open UGS NX5, the differences in the modeling window tab menu have more submenu. like assembly navigator, part navigator, and process studio.

part navigator use to navigate the part that we made in the modeling window, just click the plus mark to breakdown the part navigator, at the part model history we can see what we was made, and what we was do for those part, like blend, subtract, extrude, chamfer etc.

assembly navigator
it use when we assembly more than one part.

Getting Started with new file

For simple tutorial, play video tutorial below

To make new file we can click icon for new file or from file chose new, or just press CTRL + N if you prefer using shortcut

after selected new, pop up window will appear like picture below

from those pop up window you can fill file name, located folder, file type, and unit drawing.
file name & folder
just select folder icon you will guide with popup window to select your folder.to change the file name, just erased default value using delete or backspace then write your file name.
model type
or file type, at the model tab menu UGS NX5 will provide various modeling environment like, modeling, assembly, NX sheet metal, routing mechanical, routing electrical and others. not all modeling type available or should works, it's very depend with your license.
Units Drawing
basically we can chose one from three that available from UG
inch, millimeters or all.

from this step we can also make drawing, just click tab drawing then you will able to choose your sheet plane size. ( see picture below)
